Adding Atlanta to Our Gazetteer ...

As we work on our Gazetteer, we occasionally find mention of a community that is new to us. When we find such a community, we add it to our Gazetteer with the hope of adding more information in the future.

We originally found mention of Atlanta in both the FIPS-55 and the GNIS. For more information, see the FIPS and GNIS Codes sections on our Miscellaneous Page.

In addition, we also found mention of Atlanta elsewhere: The earliest book where we found it mentioned was in the Business Atlas and Shippers' Guide (1895).

We also found Atlanta on a Rand McNally Map of Georgia (1911).

For more details about the above, see References and Mentions for Atlanta on our Genealogy Page.

<2>Population counts have been provided by the U.S. Census Bureau. For more detail, please visit our Census Page for Atlanta.
<3>The elevation is an estimate for the area around Atlanta - it will be higher in some places and lower in others.
<4>Of the area codes for Atlanta, area code (470, 678) is an overlay.
<5>ZIP Codes have been created by the United States Postal Service (USPS) as a way of grouping addresses to make delivery more efficient. The boundaries of the ZIP Code can be changed, re-assigned, eliminated or overlapped with other ZIP Codes. So keep in mind that any given ZIP Code is only 'loosely' associated with a city (such as Atlanta). When looking for a ZIP Code, whether Atlanta or elsewhere, it's always best to check the website of the United States Postal Service (USPS).

Our list of ZIP Codes for Atlanta includes: 30301, 30302, 30303, 30304, 30305, 30306, 30307, 30308, 30309, 30310, 30311, 30312, 30313, 30314, 30315, 30316, 30317, 30318, 30319, 30320, 30321, 30324, 30325, 30326, 30327, 30328, 30329, 30330, 30331, 30332, 30333, 30336, 30337, 30338, 30339, 30340, 30341, 30342, 30343, 30344, 30345, 30346, 30347, 30348, 30349, 30353, 30354, 30355, 30356, 30357, 30358, 30359, 30360, 30361, 30364, 30366, 30368, 30369, 30370, 30374, 30375, 30376, 30377, 30378, 30379, 30384, 30385, 30386, 30387, 30388, 30389, 30392, 30394, 30396, 30398, 31106, 31119, 31126, 31131, 31139, 31141, 31145, 31150, 31156, 31191, 31192, 31195, 31196, 31197, 31198 & 31199.
<6>Our distances are not driving distances, but are calculated as a 'point-to-point' distance. A straight line distance ignores things like rivers, canyons, lakes, et cetera - it's truly a line from Point A (ie- Atlanta) to Point B.

If you need the driving distance (or directions), we recommend that you use one of the Mapping Services listed on our Map Page for Atlanta. Since we usually use Google Maps for our own planning, we've provided the following link: Google Map and Driving Directions starting from Atlanta

Our distance measurements begin at a specific point in Atlanta. The point we use is located at these GPS coordinates - Latitude: 33.7543, Longitude: -84.3899
<7>The location has been supplied by the Geographic Names Information System - which is maintained by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). While these values should be definitive, we have found that accuracy can vary and you should double-check the location if accuracy is required.
