How Far From Sherman to ...
We spend a lot of time looking through Gazetteers that were published in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Many of the Gazetteers include the distance from a community such as Sherman to various places of note, such as the White House.
With a nod to our favorite Gazetteers, the straight-line distance beginning in Sherman and extending to:
- Houlton, which is the Seat of Aroostook County, lies 32 miles [51.5 km]<2> to the east northeast. If you could walk a straight line from Sherman to Houlton, with an average speed<7> of 2.2 miles [3.5 km] per hour, it would take most of two days to make the trip. A horse and buggy averaging 3.2 miles [5.1 km] per hour would take just over a day.
- Augusta, which is the State Capital of Maine, lies 126 miles [202.8 km] to the south southwest (SSW). Driving, with an average speed of 63 miles [101.4 km] per hour, would take less than three hours, a buggy would take 5 days and walking would take 8 days.
- The White House (Washington, DC) is 651 miles [1,047.7 km] to the southwest (SW). Driving would take just over a day, a buggy would take 26 days and walking would take 37 days.
