Welcome to Shem ...

So far, we found very little information about Shem. The little that we've found leads us believe that the community is historic.<1>

We've added Shem to our Gazetteer with the hope that we can develop more information. If you can help us with Shem, please Contact Us.


Shem would have been located within present day Washington County<2>.

While we don't have a date for the founding of Shem, you might consider that their post office opened  in 1903.

While the community is gone, the present day location for Shem is 3,240 feet [988 m] above sea level.<3> In other words, the altitude of Shem is about ½ mile above sea level.

Time Zone: The area where Shem was located is in the Mountain Time Zone (MST/MDT) and observes daylight saving time

Note: If you leave Shem and travel west, you will leave Mountain Time and cross into the Pacific Time Zone (PST/PDT).

We originally found mention of Shem in both the FIPS-55 and the GNIS. For more information, see the FIPS and GNIS Codes sections on our Miscellaneous Page.

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Shem was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<5>
