Rutherford County was founded in 1803. Rutherford was created by taking area from Davidson, Williamson and Wilson Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Rutherford had a population of 332,125 people. This is an increase of 26.47% since the last Census (which gave a population of 262,604 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Rutherford represented 4.14% of the total population of Tennessee.
