Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Townsend had an population of 2,654 people. This is an increase of 29.53% since the 2010 Census (or an increase of 667.05% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Townsend had a population of 2,049 people. This makes Townsend the county's 6th most populous community.

The population of Townsend represents 0.23% of the total population of Delaware (which has 897,934 people), making it the state's 19th most populous community.
