Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Decatur had an population of 1,650 people. This is an increase of 3.25% since the 2010 Census (or an increase of 18.28% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Decatur had a population of 1,598 people (which is 13.6% of the total population of Meigs County). This makes Decatur the county's most populous community.

The population of Decatur represents 0.03% of the total population of Tennessee (which has 6,346,105 people), making it the state's 191st most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 1,598 people, the population of Decatur increased 14.55% from the 2000 Census (which had a count of 1,395 people).

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Decatur was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<7>

From that list, the Decatur post office opened in 1836.

We also found Decatur in the book titled U.S. Post Offices (Oct. 1846).
