At the time of the 2010 Census, Sweetwater had a population of 5,764 people (or 12.95% of the total population of Monroe County). This makes Sweetwater the county's most populous community.

The population of Sweetwater represents 0.09% of the population of Tennessee (which has 6,346,105 people), making it the state's 90th most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 5,764 people, the population of Sweetwater increased 3.19% from the 2000 Census (which had a count of 5,586 people).
