The city of Sweetwater is primarily located in Monroe County<1>. A portion of Sweetwater extends into McMinn County.

The location of Sweetwater has been provided by the Geographic Names Information System (ie- the GNIS).<2>

While we don't have a date for the founding of Sweetwater, you might consider that their post office opened  in 1836.

From the  Census Estimates for 2019, Sweetwater has a population of 5,913 people<3> (see below for details).

Sweetwater is 990 feet [302 m] above sea level.<4>.

Time Zone: Sweetwater lies in the Eastern Time Zone (EST/EDT) and observes daylight saving time

Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Sweetwater had an population of 5,913 people. This is an increase of 2.59% since the 2010 Census (or an increase of 5.85% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Sweetwater had a population of 5,764 people (or 12.95% of the total population of Monroe County). This makes Sweetwater the county's most populous community.

The population of Sweetwater represents 0.09% of the total population of Tennessee (which has 6,346,105 people), making it the state's 90th most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 5,764 people, the population of Sweetwater increased 3.19% from the 2000 Census (with a count of 5,586 people).

We originally found mention of Sweetwater in both the FIPS-55 and the GNIS. For more information, see the FIPS and GNIS Codes sections on our Miscellaneous Page.

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Sweetwater was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<7>

From that list, the Sweetwater post office opened in 1836.

We also found Sweetwater on a map titled Rand McNally Map of Tennessee (1888).
