Chota would have been located within present day Monroe County<2>.

While we don't have a date for the founding of Chota, you might consider that their post office opened in 1818.

While the community is gone, the present day location for Chota is 810 feet [247 m] above sea level.<3>.

Time Zone: The area where Chota was located is in the Eastern Time Zone (EST/EDT) and observes daylight saving time

Note: If you travel west from Chota (for example, toward Pikeville), you will leave Eastern Time and cross into the Central Time Zone (CST/CDT).

We originally found mention of Chota in the GNIS. For more information, see the Referenced GNIS Codes section on our Miscellaneous Page.

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found (so far) for Chota was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<5>

From that list, the Chota post office opened in 1818. The Chota post office closed in 1859.
