The community of Elko is the Seat for Elko County.

Elko County was founded March 5, 1869 and was created by taking area from LanderCounty.

From the Census Estimates for 2009, <1> Elko had a population of 47,896 people. This is an increase of 5.75% since the last Census (which gave a population of 45,291 people in 2000).

At the time of the 2000 Census, Elko represented 2.27% of the total population of Nevada, making it the state's 3rd most populous county (out of 17 counties).
