The community of Elko is the Seat for Elko County.

Elko County was founded March 5, 1869 and was created by taking area from Lander County.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Elko had a population of 52,880 people. This is an increase of 8.32% since the last Census (which gave a population of 48,818 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Elko represented 1.81% of the total population of Nevada.
