Lander County is one of the original counties of Nevada and was founded December 19, 1862.

From the Census Estimates for 2009, <1> Lander had a population of 5,159 people. This is a decrease of 10.96% since the last Census (which gave a population of 5,794 people in 2000).

At the time of the 2000 Census, Lander represented 0.29% of the total population of Nevada, making it the state's 11th most populous county (out of 17 counties).
