Welcome to Nishu ...

So far, we found very little information about Nishu. The little that we've found leads us believe that the community is historic.<1>

We've added Nishu to our Gazetteer with the hope that we can develop more information. If you can help us with Nishu, please Contact Us.

Nishu would have been located within present day McLean County<2>.

While we don't have a date for the founding of Nishu, you might consider that their post office opened in 1926. The community was inundated by Lake Sakakawea.

Adding Nishu to Our Gazetteer ...

As we work on our Gazetteer, we occasionally find mention of a community that is new to us. When we find such a community, we add it to our Gazetteer with the hope of adding more information in the future.

The earliest source (so far) we've referenced which mentioned Nishu was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<4>

From that list, the Nishu post office opened in 1926. The Nishu post office closed in 1941.

For more details, see References and Mentions for Nishu.

Footnotes ...

<1>We use the term 'Historic' broadly and it generally means that the community no longer exists. However, it can also mean that the community might still exist, but was significantly larger or had a more 'official' existence in the past than it does now. Unfortunately our sources of data have proven to be unreliable. If you can provide us with more specific information about Nishu, please let us know so that we can improve our accuracy.
<2>If you're interested in how the shape of North Dakota's counties, including McLean, have changed over time, we recommend the Atlas of Historical County Boundaries.
