At the time of the 2010 Census, Matthews had a population of 27,198 people. This makes Matthews the county's 3rd most populous community.

The population of Matthews represents 0.29% of the population of North Carolina (which has 9,535,483 people), making it the state's 32nd most populous community.

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Matthews was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<9>

From that list, the Matthews post office opened in 1875.

We also found Matthews in the book titled Business Atlas and Shippers' Guide (1895).
