Alamance County was founded in 1849 and was created by taking area from Orange County.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Alamance had a population of 169,173 people. This is an increase of 11.94% since the last Census (which gave a population of 151,131 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Alamance represented 1.58% of the total population of North Carolina.
