Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Tupelo had an population of 38,364 people. This is an increase of 11.05% since the 2010 Census (or an increase of 12.14% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Tupelo had a population of 34,546 people (or 41.67% of the total population of Lee County). This makes Tupelo the county's most populous community.

The population of Tupelo represents 1.16% of the total population of Mississippi (which has 2,967,297 people), making it the state's 7th most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 34,546 people, the population of Tupelo has remained roughly the same as the 2000 Census (which had a count of 34,211 people).

We originally found mention of Tupelo in both the FIPS-55 and the GNIS. For more information, see the FIPS and GNIS Codes sections on our Miscellaneous Page.

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Tupelo was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<8>

From that list, the Tupelo post office opened in 1860.

We also found Tupelo in the book titled List of Post Offices in the United States (1870).
