Ray County was founded in 1820 and was created by taking area from Howard County.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Ray had a population of 23,024 people. This is a decrease of 2% since the last Census (which gave a population of 23,494 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Ray represented 0.39% of the total population of Missouri.
