Montrose County was founded February 11, 1883 and was created by taking area from Gunnison County.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Montrose had a population of 42,758 people. This is an increase of 3.82% since the last Census (which gave a population of 41,186 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Montrose represented 0.82% of the total population of Colorado.
