Gunnison County was founded March 9, 1877 and was created by taking area from LakeCounty.

From the Census Estimates for 2009, <1> Gunnison had a population of 15,350 people. This is an increase of 9.99% since the last Census (which gave a population of 13,956 people in 2000).

At the time of the 2000 Census, Gunnison represented 0.32% of the total population of Colorado, making it the state's 32nd most populous county (out of 64 counties).
