The community of Gunnison is the Seat for Gunnison County.

Gunnison County was founded March 9, 1877 and was created by taking area from Lake County.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Gunnison had a population of 17,462 people. This is an increase of 14.2% since the last Census (which gave a population of 15,291 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Gunnison represented 0.3% of the total population of Colorado.
