Welcome to Bodie ...

So far, we found very little information about Bodie. The little that we've found leads us believe that the community is historic.<1>

Bodie would have been located within present day Mono County<2>.

Bodie was established in 1876.

While the community is gone, the present day location for Bodie is 8,370 feet [2,551 m] above sea level.<3> In other words, the elevation of Bodie is about 1½ mile [or ~2½ km] above sea level.

Time Zone: The area where Bodie was located is in the Pacific Time Zone (PST/PDT) and observes daylight saving time

Adding Bodie to Our Gazetteer ...

We originally found mention of Bodie in both the FIPS-55 and the GNIS. For more information, see the FIPS and GNIS Codes sections on our Miscellaneous Page.

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found (so far) for Bodie was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<6>

From that list, the Bodie post office opened in 1877. The Bodie post office closed in 1942.

<1>We use the term 'Historic' broadly and it generally means that the community no longer exists. However, it can also mean that the community might still exist, but was significantly larger or had a more 'official' existence in the past than it does now. Unfortunately our sources of data have proven to be unreliable. If you can provide us with more specific information about Bodie, please let us know so that we can improve our accuracy.

<3>The elevation is an estimate for the area around Bodie - it will be higher in some places and lower in others.
<4>When there's a risk of an area code running out of phone numbers, an 'Overlay Area Code' is created that has the same geographic boundaries as the existing area code. In this case, the 760 code has been Overlayed with the 442 area code. New phone numbers in the Bodie area will be assigned with one of these codes: 760 or 442.
