Around Gateway ...

So far, we have found very little information about Gateway.<1>

The little that we've found leads us believe that the community is historic.<2>

We've added Gateway to our Gazetteer with the hope that we can develop more information. If you can help us with Gateway, please Contact Us.

The largest community within a 50 mile [80 km] radius is Cranbrook (BC). It is located about 44 miles [70 km] to the northwest of where Gateway would have been located. Cranbrook (BC) has a population of 18,300 people.<3>

The next largest community is Crowsnest Pass (AB). It is located about 50 miles [80 km] to the northeast of Gateway and has a population of 5,700 people.

The following large communities are also in the area. Keep in mind that when we give a distance, it's a 'straight-line' distance starting from Gateway and not the distance if you are driving it.<4>

Although Gateway is historic, the Panormaio website has a photo collection that might have pictures from the area where Gateway was located:

Footnotes ...

<1>If we encounter the name of what might be a community, our methodology is to add that name to our Gazetteer. For example, we might find a sentence like "He went south past Gateway and then turned east". While Gateway could be some kind of landmark, we think that it's more likely to be a community. We've added Gateway as a placeholder with the hope that we'll be able to add more information in the future.

Just as a reminder: Our definition of a community is rather broad and includes those places where several families lived and had a name which identified that place. The community might still exist or it might have existed for just a short period of time. Places of interest include buildings at a crossroad, families in a hollow or maybe the location of a way station. It also includes places like mines, lumber camps, ferry crossings, etc.

Also keep in mind that Gateway could have been on the original document by mistake, misspelled, the original/alternate name of a community that we've listed elsewhere or was placed in the wrong county. Sometimes a post office or train station would have a different name than the community where it's located, so two names might be referring to the same community.

Since confusion between counties is common, we searched and weren't able to find another Montana community named Gateway.

<2>We use the term 'Historic' broadly and it generally means that the community no longer exists. However, it can also mean that the community might still exist, but was significantly larger or had a more 'official' existence in the past than it does now. Unfortunately our sources of data have proven to be unreliable. If you can provide us with more specific information about Gateway, please let us know so that we can improve our accuracy.

<3>Population counts have been provided by the U.S. Census Bureau. For more detail, please visit our Census Page for Gateway.

<4>Our distances are not driving distances, but are calculated as a 'point-to-point' distance starting from Gateway. A straight line distance ignores things like rivers, canyons, lakes, et cetera - it's truly a line from Point A (ie- Gateway) to Point B.

Our distance measurements begin at a specific point in Gateway. The point that we are using is located at these GPS coordinates - Latitude: 48.9991, Longitude: -115.1732     [Map]. The coordinates for Gateway have been provided by the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS).

<6>The IATA and ICAO are organizations that, amongst other functions, provide identifying codes for airports. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) is an airline trade organization. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) is an agency of the United Nations. Although the codes are similar, be careful not to confuse them.

<7>On an airport-by-airport basis, an NFDC report typically includes a description of airport operations, contacts, the runway(s), and radio, navigation & weather frequencies. The National Flight Data Center (NFDC) is operated by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) with the purpose of collecting, validating and disseminating information about airports.

<8>When we are planning a trip (for example, to Gateway), we usually look for the obvious: the choice of airlines that fly into the airport, the number of flights, the connections we have to make, which car rentals are available, etc. We also look for sights and attractions that we might find between any given airport and our destination - we do love exploring. We're willing to fly into a more distant airport if we can get the services and amenities that we like. Even though our choice of airport might be inconvenient to others, it usually gives us a better trip.
