At the time of the 2010 Census, Wheeling had a population of 28,486 people (or 64.1% of the total population of Ohio County). This makes Wheeling the county's most populous community.

The population of Wheeling represents 1.54% of the total population of West Virginia (which has 1,852,994 people), making it the state's 5th most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 28,486 people, the population of Wheeling decreased 9.34% from the 2000 Census (which had a count of 31,419 people).
