Time Zone: The area where Hamilton was located is in the Eastern Time Zone (EST/EDT) and observes daylight saving time

The location where Hamilton once stood is in the (304) and (681)<6> area codes.

Adding Hamilton to Our Gazetteer ...

As we work on our Gazetteer, we occasionally find mention of a community that is new to us. When we find such a community, we add it to our Gazetteer with the hope of adding more information in the future.

We originally found mention of Hamilton in both the FIPS-55 and the GNIS. For more information, see the FIPS and GNIS Codes sections on our Miscellaneous Page.

In addition, we also found mention of Hamilton elsewhere: The earliest map where we found it was on a Rand McNally Map of West Virginia (1911).

For more details about the above, see References and Mentions for Hamilton on our Genealogy Page.

Footnotes ...

<1>We use the term 'Historic' broadly and it generally means that the community no longer exists. However, it can also mean that the community might still exist, but was significantly larger or had a more 'official' existence in the past than it does now. Unfortunately our sources of data have proven to be unreliable. If you can provide us with more specific information about Hamilton, please let us know so that we can improve our accuracy.
<2>If you're interested in how the shape of West Virginia's counties, including Fayette, have changed over time, we recommend the Atlas of Historical County Boundaries.
<3>The location has been supplied by the Geographic Names Information System - which is maintained by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). While these values should be definitive, we have found that accuracy can vary and you should double-check the location if accuracy is required.
<4>A demonym is the name for a resident of a community which is usually derived from (or is related to) the name of that community. In other words, it's how the residents of Hamilton refer to themselves. It's important to note that there aren't any rules for taking a community's name and turning it into a demonym. A demonym is informal and while the majority of Hamilton may use one name, keep in mind that others may use something different.
<5>The elevation is an estimate for the area around Hamilton - it will be higher in some places and lower in others.
<6>Area code (681) is an overlay for area code (304).
<7>Our distances are not driving distances, but are calculated as a 'point-to-point' distance. A straight line distance ignores obstructions like rivers, canyons, lakes, et cetera - it's truly a line from Point A (ie- Hamilton) to Point B.

Our distance measurements begin at a specific point in Hamilton. The point we use is located at these GPS coordinates - Latitude: 38.0207, Longitude: -81.2484       In this case, the coordinates for Hamilton have been provided by the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS).
