The community of Bellingham is the Seat for Whatcom County.

Whatcom County was founded in 1854 and was created by taking area from Island County.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Whatcom had a population of 228,675 people. This is an increase of 13.69% since the last Census (which gave a population of 201,140 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Whatcom represented 2.99% of the total population of Washington.
