Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Anacortes had an population of 17,525 people. This is an increase of 11.07% since the 2010 Census (or an increase of 20.39% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Anacortes had a population of 15,778 people (or 13.5% of the total population of Skagit County). This makes Anacortes the county's 2nd most populous community.

The population of Anacortes represents 0.23% of the population of Washington (which has 6,724,540 people), making it the state's 63rd most populous community.

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Anacortes was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<8>

From that list, the Anacortes post office opened in 1879.
