At the time of the 2010 Census, Vinton had a population of 8,098 people (or 8.77% of the total population of Roanoke County). This makes Vinton the county's most populous community.

The population of Vinton represents 0.1% of the total population of Virginia (which has 8,001,024 people), making it the state's 47th most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 8,098 people, the population of Vinton increased 4.06% from the 2000 Census (which had a count of 7,782 people).

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Vinton was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<7>

From that list, the Vinton post office opened in 1885.
