Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Smithfield had an population of 8,545 people. This is an increase of 5.64% since the 2010 Census (or an increase of 35.12% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Smithfield had a population of 8,089 people (which is 22.93% of the total population of Isle of Wight County). This makes Smithfield the county's most populous community.

The population of Smithfield represents 0.1% of the total population of Virginia (which has 8,001,024 people), making it the state's 48th most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 8,089 people, the population of Smithfield increased 27.91% from the 2000 Census (which had a count of 6,324 people).

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Smithfield was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<6>

From that list, the Smithfield post office opened in 1776.
