Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Independence had an population of 893 people. This is a decrease of 5.7% since the 2010 Census (or a decrease of 8.03% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Independence had a population of 947 people (or 6.1% of the total population of Grayson County). This makes Independence the county's most populous community.

The population of Independence represents 0.01% of the population of Virginia (which has 8,001,024 people), making it the state's 143rd most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 947 people, the population of Independence decreased 2.47% from the 2000 Census (which had a count of 971 people).

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Independence was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<6>

From that list, the Independence post office opened in 1850.
