From The Origin of Certain Place Names,<3> the origin of Promontory is described as "Named because it is the highest point of the Promontory Range." While the community is gone, the present day location for Promontory is 4,910 feet [1,497 m] above sea level.<4> In other words, the altitude of Promontory is about 1 mile [or 1½ km] above sea level.
