Rains County was founded July 9, 1870. Rains was created by taking area from Hopkins, Hunt and Wood Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Rains had a population of 12,401 people. This is an increase of 13.62% since the last Census (which gave a population of 10,914 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Rains represented 0.04% of the total population of Texas.
