Leon County was founded in 1846 and was created by taking area from Robertson County.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Leon had a population of 17,421 people. This is an increase of 3.69% since the last Census (which gave a population of 16,801 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Leon represented 0.07% of the total population of Texas.
