Putnam County was founded in 1854. Putnam was created by taking area from Fentress, Jackson, Smith, White and Overton Counties.
From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Putnam had a population of 79,957 people. This is an increase of 10.56% since the last Census (which gave a population of 72,321 people in 2010).
At the time of the 2010 Census, Putnam represented 1.14% of the total population of Tennessee.
