The Commemorative Quarter for South Dakota

Welcome to Reed ...

So far, we found very little information about Reed. The little that we've found leads us believe that the community is historic.<1>

We've added Reed to our Gazetteer with the hope that we can develop more information. We would especially like to find the location of Reed - knowing its coordinates, we can explore things like its relationship to neighboring communities, nearby cemeteries, etc. If you can help us with Reed, please Contact Us.

While we don't have the exact location of Reed , we believe that it would have been located within present day Meade County<2>.

While we don't have a date for the founding of Reed, you might consider that their post office opened  in 1905.

The Area Code where Reed was located: 605

Communities Also Named Reed ...

Using our Gazetteer, we found that there are 28 communities that are also named Reed - they are located in Arkansas (3), California (2), Georgia (2), Illinois, Indiana (2), Kentucky, Maine, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania (5), South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, West Virginia and Wisconsin (2).

Adding Reed to Our Gazetteer ...

As we work on our Gazetteer, we occasionally find mention of a community that is new to us. When we find such a community, we add it to our Gazetteer with the hope of adding more information in the future.

The earliest source we've referenced which mentioned Reed was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<3>

X2X - From that list, the Reed post office opened in 1905.

Footnotes ...

<1>We use the term 'Historic' broadly and it generally means that the community no longer exists. However, it can also mean that the community might still exist, but was significantly larger or had a more 'official' existence in the past than it does now. Unfortunately our sources of data have proven to be unreliable. If you can provide us with more specific information about Reed, please let us know so that we can improve our accuracy.
<2>If you're interested in how the shape of South Dakota's counties, including Meade, have changed over time, we recommend the Atlas of Historical County Boundaries.
