Lexington County was founded in 1804 and was created by taking area from Orangeburg County.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Lexington had a population of 299,421 people. This is an increase of 14.11% since the last Census (which gave a population of 262,391 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Lexington represented 5.67% of the total population of South Carolina.
