Luzerne County was founded September 25, 1786 and was created by taking area from Northumberland County.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Luzerne had a population of 317,417 people. This is a decrease of 1.12% since the last Census (which gave a population of 320,998 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Luzerne represented 2.53% of the total population of Pennsylvania.
