Elk County was founded April 18, 1843. Elk was created by taking area from Jefferson, Clearfield and McKean Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Elk had a population of 29,910 people. This is a decrease of 6.12% since the last Census (which gave a population of 31,861 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Elk represented 0.25% of the total population of Pennsylvania.
