Welcome to Manhattan ...

So far, we found very little information about Manhattan. The little that we've found leads us believe that the community is historic.<1>

We've added Manhattan to our Gazetteer with the hope that we can develop more information. We would especially like to find the location of Manhattan - knowing its coordinates, we can explore things like its relationship to neighboring communities, nearby cemeteries, etc. If you can help us with Manhattan, please Contact Us.

While we don't have the exact location of Manhattan , we believe that it would have been located within present day Lucas County<2>.

While we don't have a date for the founding of Manhattan, you might consider that their post office opened in 1836.

When the people of Manhattan referred to themselves (known as a demonym), they are believed to have used Manhattanite<3>

Time Zone: The area where Manhattan was located is in the Eastern Time Zone (EST/EDT) and observes daylight saving time

The Area Codes where Manhattan was located: 419 & 567<4>

While we believe that this Manhattan is located in Lucas County, we know of another 3 Ohio communities named Manhattan. Those communities are located in the following counties: Allen, Jefferson and Lawrence County.

Beyond Ohio, there are 18 communities that are also named Manhattan - they are located in Colorado, Florida (2), Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas and Utah.

We originally found mention of Manhattan in the GNIS. For more information, see the Referenced GNIS Codes section on our Miscellaneous Page.

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Manhattan was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<5>

X2X - From that list, the Manhattan post office opened in 1836.

We also found Manhattan in the book titled U.S. Post Offices (Oct. 1846).

<1>	We use the term 'Historic' broadly and it generally means that the community no longer exists. However, it can also mean that the community might still exist, but was significantly larger or had a more 'official' existence in the past than it does now. Unfortunately our sources of data have proven to be unreliable. If you can provide us with more specific information about Manhattan, please let us know so that we can improve our accuracy.

<3>	A demonym is the name for a resident of a community which is usually derived from (or is related to) the name of that community. In other words, it's how the residents of Manhattan refer to themselves. It's important to note that there aren't any rules for taking a community's name and turning it into a demonym. A demonym is informal and while the majority of Manhattan may use one name, keep in mind that others may use something different.
<4>	When there's a risk of an area code running out of phone numbers, an 'Overlay Area Code' is created that has the same geographic boundaries as the existing area code. In this case, the 419 code has been Overlayed with the 567 area code. New phone numbers in the Manhattan area will be assigned with one of these codes: 419 or 567. As a result, placing a call in the Manhattan area will require 10-digit dialing (where you enter both the area code and then the phone number).
