Welcome to Java ...

So far, we found very little information about Java. The little that we've found leads us believe that the community is historic.<1>

We've added Java to our Gazetteer with the hope that we can develop more information. We would especially like to find the location of Java - knowing its coordinates, we can explore things like its relationship to neighboring communities, nearby cemeteries, etc. If you can help us with Java, please Contact Us.

While we don't have the exact location of Java , we believe that it would have been located within present day Lucas County<2>.

While we don't have a date for the founding of Java, you might consider that their post office opened in 1848.

Time Zone: The area where Java was located is in the Eastern Time Zone (EST/EDT) and observes daylight saving time

Using our Gazetteer, we found that there are 9 communities that are also named Java - they are located in Alabama, California, Mississippi, Montana, New York, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas and Virginia.

The earliest source we've referenced which mentioned Java was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<4>

X2X - From that list, the Java post office opened in 1848.

We also found Java in the book titled Table of U.S. Post Offices in the United States (Jan. 1851).

<1>	We use the term 'Historic' broadly and it generally means that the community no longer exists. However, it can also mean that the community might still exist, but was significantly larger or had a more 'official' existence in the past than it does now. Unfortunately our sources of data have proven to be unreliable. If you can provide us with more specific information about Java, please let us know so that we can improve our accuracy.
<2>	If you're interested in how the shape of Ohio's counties, including Lucas, have changed over time, we recommend the Atlas of Historical County Boundaries.
<3>	When there's a risk of an area code running out of phone numbers, an 'Overlay Area Code' is created that has the same geographic boundaries as the existing area code. In this case, the 419 code has been Overlayed with the 567 area code. New phone numbers in the Java area will be assigned with one of these codes: 419 or 567. As a result, placing a call in the Java area will require 10-digit dialing (where you enter both the area code and then the phone number).
