Adding Cokesbury to Our Gazetteer ...

As we work on our Gazetteer, we occasionally find mention of a community that is new to us. When we find such a community, we add it to our Gazetteer with the hope of adding more information in the future.

The earliest source (so far) we've referenced which mentioned Cokesbury was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<5>

From that list, the Cokesbury post office opened in 1851. The Cokesbury post office closed in 1853.

Footnotes ...

<1>We use the term 'Historic' broadly and it generally means that the community no longer exists. However, it can also mean that the community might still exist, but was significantly larger or had a more 'official' existence in the past than it does now. Unfortunately our sources of data have proven to be unreliable. If you can provide us with more specific information about Cokesbury, please let us know so that we can improve our accuracy.
<2>If you're interested in how the shape of Ohio's counties, including Licking, have changed over time, we recommend the Atlas of Historical County Boundaries.
<3>When there's a risk of an area code running out of phone numbers, an 'Overlay Area Code' is created that has the same geographic boundaries as the existing area code. In this case, the 740 code has been Overlayed with the 220 area code. New phone numbers in the Cokesbury area will be assigned with one of these codes: 740 or 220. As a result, placing a call in the Cokesbury area will require 10-digit dialing (where you enter both the area code and then the phone number).
