Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Troy had an population of 49,109 people. This is a decrease of 2.03% since the 2010 Census (or a decrease of 0.12% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Troy had a population of 50,129 people (or 31.44% of the total population of Rensselaer County). This makes Troy the county's most populous community.

The population of Troy represents 0.26% of the population of New York (which has 19,378,102 people), making it the state's 36th most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 50,129 people, the population of Troy increased 1.95% from the 2000 Census (which had a count of 49,170 people).
