At the time of the 2010 Census, Taos had a population of 5,716 people (or 17.35% of the total population of Taos County). This makes Taos the county's most populous community.

The population of Taos represents 0.28% of the total population of New Mexico (which has 2,059,179 people), making it the state's 32nd most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 5,716 people, the population of Taos increased 21.62% from the 2000 Census (with a count of 4,700 people).
