Welcome to Playas ...So far, we found very little information about Playas. The little that we've found leads us believe that the community is historic.<1> We've added Playas to our Gazetteer with the hope that we can develop more information. If you can help us with Playas, please Contact Us. Playas was located in southwest New Mexico. Playas would have been located within present day Hidalgo County<2>. The location of Playas has been provided by the Geographic Names Information System (ie- the GNIS).<3> While we don't have a date for the founding of Playas, you might consider that their post office opened in 1912. While the community is gone, the present day location for Playas is 4,490 feet [1,369 m] above sea level.<4> In other words, the altitude of Playas is about ¾ mile [or ~1¼ km] above sea level. Time Zone: The area where Playas was located is in the Mountain Time Zone (MST/MDT) and observes daylight saving time Note: If you travel west from Playas, you will leave Mountain Time and cross into the Mountain Standard Time Zone (MST). In addition, you will be moving from an area that observes daylight saving time to one that does not. Playas would have been located in the (575) area code. From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Playas was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<7> We also found Playas mentioned on a train schedule titled Southern Pacific Railroad Time Tables (July 1929).
