Welcome to Playas ...

So far, we found very little information about Playas. The little that we've found leads us believe that the community is historic.<1>

Playas was located in southwest New Mexico.

Playas would have been located within present day Hidalgo County<2>.

While we don't have a date for the founding of Playas, you might consider that their post office opened in 1912.

While the community is gone, the present day location for Playas is 4,490 feet [1,369 m] above sea level.<3> In other words, the elevation of Playas is about ¾ mile [or ~1¼ km] above sea level.

Time Zone: The area where Playas was located is in the Mountain Time Zone (MST/MDT) and observes daylight saving time

Note: If you leave Playas and travel west, you will leave Mountain Time and cross into the Mountain Standard Time Zone (MST). In addition, you will be moving from an area that observes daylight saving time to one that does not.

Adding Playas to Our Gazetteer ...

We originally found mention of Playas in both the FIPS-55 and the GNIS. For more information, see the FIPS and GNIS Codes sections on our Miscellaneous Page.

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found (so far) for Playas was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<5>

From that list, the Playas post office opened in 1912. The Playas post office closed in 1917.
