So far, we found very little information about Leighton. The little that we've found leads us believe that the community is historic.<1>

We've added Leighton to our Gazetteer with the hope that we can develop more information. While we don't have the exact location of Leighton , we believe that it would have been located within present day Union County<2>.

While we don't have a date for the founding of Leighton, you might consider that their post office opened in 1890.

Using our Gazetteer, we found that there are two New Mexico communities named Leighton: This one is located in Union County and the other is located in Colfax County.

Beyond New Mexico, there are 12 communities that are also named Leighton - they are located in Alabama, Arkansas, California, Georgia, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Manitoba, Minnesota, Mississippi and Tennessee.

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Leighton was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<3>

From that list, the Leighton post office opened in 1890.
