Harding County was founded in 1921. Harding was created by taking area from Mora and Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2009, <1> Harding had a population of 663 people. This is a decrease of 18.15% since the last Census (which gave a population of 810 people in 2000).

At the time of the 2000 Census, Harding represented 0.04% of the total population of New Mexico, making it the state's 33rd most populous county (out of 33 counties).
