The Commemorative Quarter for Nebraska

Welcome to Compton ...

So far, we found very little information about Compton. The little that we've found leads us believe that the community is historic.<1>

We've added Compton to our Gazetteer with the hope that we can develop more information. We would especially like to find the location of Compton - knowing its coordinates, we can explore things like its relationship to neighboring communities, nearby cemeteries, etc. If you can help us with Compton, please Contact Us.

While we don't have the exact location of Compton , we believe that it would have been located within present day Cherry County<2>.

While we don't have a date for the founding of Compton, you might consider that their post office opened  in 1889.

The Area Codes where Compton was located: 402 & 531<3>

Communities Also Named Compton ...

Using our Gazetteer, we found that there are 20 communities that are also named Compton - they are located in Alabama, Arkansas (2), California, Georgia (2), Illinois, Maryland (2), Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania (2), Quebec, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia.

For more information, see our Tidbits & Trivia Page for Compton.

Adding Compton to Our Gazetteer ...

The earliest source we've referenced which mentioned Compton was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<4>

X2X - From that list, the Compton post office opened in 1889.

We also found Compton on a map titled Rand McNally Map of Nebraska (1895).

Footnotes ...

<1>We use the term 'Historic' broadly and it generally means that the community no longer exists. However, it can also mean that the community might still exist, but was significantly larger or had a more 'official' existence in the past than it does now. Unfortunately our sources of data have proven to be unreliable. If you can provide us with more specific information about Compton, please let us know so that we can improve our accuracy.
<2>If you're interested in how the shape of Nebraska's counties, including Cherry, have changed over time, we recommend the Atlas of Historical County Boundaries.
<3>When there's a risk of an area code running out of phone numbers, an 'Overlay Area Code' is created that has the same geographic boundaries as the existing area code. In this case, the 402 code has been Overlayed with the 531 area code. New phone numbers in the Compton area will be assigned with one of these codes: 402 or 531. As a result, placing a call in the Compton area will require 10-digit dialing (where you enter both the area code and then the phone number).
