From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Cathay was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<6>

From that list, the Cathay post office opened in 1893.

We also found Cathay on a map titled Rand McNally Map of North Dakota (1897).
