The community of Bakersville is the Seat for Mitchell County.

Mitchell County was founded in 1861. Mitchell was created by taking area from Burke, Caldwell, McDowell, Watauga and Yancey Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Mitchell had a population of 14,964 people. This is a decrease of 3.53% since the last Census (which gave a population of 15,512 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Mitchell represented 0.16% of the total population of North Carolina.
