At the time of the 2010 Census, Plains had a population of 1,048 people (or 9.18% of the total population of Sanders County). This makes Plains the county's 2nd most populous community.

The population of Plains represents 0.11% of the total population of Montana (which has 989,415 people), making it the state's 51st most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 1,048 people, the population of Plains decreased 6.93% from the 2000 Census (which had a count of 1,126 people).
