Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Malta had an population of 1,859 people. This is a decrease of 6.91% since the 2010 Census (or a decrease of 12.31% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Malta had a population of 1,997 people (which is 46.97% of the total population of Phillips County). This makes Malta the county's most populous community.

The population of Malta represents 0.2% of the population of Montana (which has 989,415 people), making it the state's 32nd most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 1,997 people, the population of Malta decreased 5.8% from the 2000 Census (which had a count of 2,120 people).

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Malta was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<6>

From that list, the Malta post office opened in 1890.
