The community of Philipsburg is the Seat for Granite County.

Granite County was founded in 1893. Granite was created by taking area from Deer Lodge and Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2009, <1> Granite had a population of 2,879 people. This is an increase of 1.73% since the last Census (which gave a population of 2,830 people in 2000).

At the time of the 2000 Census, Granite represented 0.31% of the total population of Montana, making it the state's 42nd most populous county (out of 56 counties).
