Broadwater County was founded in 1897. Broadwater was created by taking area from Jefferson and Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2009, <1> Broadwater had a population of 4,793 people. This is an increase of 9.3% since the last Census (which gave a population of 4,385 people in 2000).

At the time of the 2000 Census, Broadwater represented 0.49% of the total population of Montana, making it the state's 37th most populous county (out of 56 counties).
